Valentine Fund Guidelines


What is the Valentine Fund?

The Valentine Fund was established by the Portland Area Theatre Alliance (PATA) to provide financial assistance to members of the theatre community (actors, technicians, designers, administrators, staff, etc.) during times of medical or personal emergency. The Valentine Fund Committee operates under the umbrella of PATA and is made up of both Board and non-board PATA members.

Who may apply to receive assistance from the Valentine Fund?

Anyone who has been a PATA member for at least two months prior to application to the Valentine Fund, and who has been active in the theatre community for the past two (2) years as detailed in their resume. These need not have been paid positions.
Board members of PATA, their families or members of their common households are not eligible to apply.

How much money may applicants request?

Applicants may request up to $1000 with each application. Submission of an application does not guarantee an award of financial assistance. Regardless of whether an application results in financial aid, applicants are eligible to reapply six (6) months after decision of their previous application. While requests for assistance can be made an unlimited number of times, repeated funding is not guaranteed, and priority consideration will be given to first-time applicants.

Please note that the financial resources of the Valentine Fund are limited. Awards of assistance will equal the total sum requested whenever possible. However, in the event that the Valentine Fund is unable to grant the full financial request, a partial award may result.

Is there a deadline?

There is no deadline for submitting an application. An applicant may expect a response within 3- to 6-weeks.

Are certain types of applications given priority over others?

Applications evidencing medical emergency, such as diagnosis of a life-threatening illness or seriously debilitating disease, or major physical injury, will be given priority. Consideration will then be given to applications indicating significant personal emergency, such as loss of residence due to fire or theft of tools of trade.
Please note that these are general guidelines only and each application will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Are there restrictions on the purposes for which an applicant may request assistance from the Valentine Fund?

The intention of the Valentine Fund is to help members of the theatre community meet immediate needs resulting from medical and personal emergencies. Therefore, it is not intended to cover ongoing hospitalization expenses, and those applications requesting assistance solely to meet such expenses will not be considered.

Who makes decisions regarding awards of assistance from the Valentine Fund?

A 3 or 5 person selection committee, a subset of the Valentine Committee, will confidentially review and consider all applications. Applications considered eligible for assistance will be presented for vote at the monthly PATA Board meeting. Applications which receive majority approval by the Board will receive assistance. Each applicant will be contacted once a decision has been made regarding his or her application.
